After the Giro d’Italia’s Grande Partenza from Hungary, the Italian Grand Tour is continuing its route along the Italian Peninsula with a number of new features. Among these is ‘Giroland’, a new format and renovated commercial village with a new identity, structure and content.
According to the event organiser, RCS Sport, Giroland’s goal is to improve the experience of the many visitors it welcomes across the 18 stages leading up to Verona.
In addition to a new entrance arch, inside Giroland there will be four areas dedicated to the history and symbols of the Corsa Rosa. These will include various entertainment and engagement activities.
The Giro 100 Trofeo Senza Fine trophy will be on display for visitors to admire, with a dedicated photobox. Visitors can learn about key stages within the history of the Giro d’Italia, through a historical Maglia Rosa exhibition, featuring video and audio content.
There will be a space dedicated to the Giro d’Italia Virtual, allowing visitors to cycle virtually along the routes of the Corsa Rosa. There will also be funfair games and the pink kiosk of San Gabriel, the aperitif point of Giroland.
Those who register online before visiting Giroland will receive a points collection card at the entrance. By participating in activities within each tent, visitors will receive a stamp. After completing the card with all the stamps, a gift can be collected at the GiroStore.
Carovana
With the return of the Corsa Rosa to Italy, this year, the passage of the Carovana will include an on stage circus before departure. There will also be further shows at Giroland in the stages of Scalea, Naples, Reggio Emilia, Genoa, Turin, Cogne, Treviso, Cividale del Friuli (from 17:30 to 18:00 CET) and in Verona in the arena.
‘The Carovana of the 105th Giro d’Italia is made up of 55 vehicles including Sponsors, Organization, Onlus, Stage Towns and Technical Escorts with 110 staff members including entertainers, dancers, jugglers and circus performers. Between Catania and Verona the Carovana will cover 6323km, with 105 stops scheduled in the 18 Italian competition days.’
Thousands of merchandise items will be distributed as gifts at each stop by the partners of the Giro d’Italia. This will include caps, water bottles, chocolate, bracelets and more.
The leading vehicle is an IVECO S-WAY truck, the official supplier. This will also be present in the caravan, twice daily.
Other partners include Enel Energia, E-Distribuzione, Enel Green Power, Mediolanum, Toyota, Trelleborg, New Holland, Acqua Lauretana, Raspini, Lollo Caffè, Mollo, GLS, DMT, Dole, Novi, Weissman, Eolo, Astoria, Free To X, Carglass, Maruzza Foundation.
Ride Green
For the seventh consecutive year, the Giro d’Italia will ‘Ride Green’. According to RCS Sport, it is the only cycling stage race event of global significance to have a low environmental impact among its core priorities.
Ride Green, the sustainability project aimed at safeguarding the areas affected by the race through separate waste collection, was created in 2016. It aims to reduce the effects of the passage of the Corsa Rosa, through the management of the waste flows produced by the race, using a traceability system.
Biciscuola
Biciscuola is an educational program conceived 21 years ago to bring young people closer to the world of cycling, and to the Giro d’Italia itself.
‘By transmitting its positive values related to sport and fair play, the initiative tackles ever current issues, the most recent of which is the importance of environmental protection.’
In 2021 the participation of 200 schools, 4,400 teachers and 60,000 children were registered while 1,900 students were awarded (+14.3% compared to the previous edition). Record numbers of over 1,600,000 children have been involved up to now.
Biciscuola involves primary school children (6-10 years) located in the localities crossed by both the Giro d’Italia and the cycling Classics organized between March and September. From this year it will also involve children in the schools in the starting towns of the Giro-E.
