More than 5,000 runners and 500 children participated in the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Washington Heights Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams delivered opening remarks and officially started the race by sounding the air horn. In addition, Mayor Adams joined the Dyckman and NYPD Run Clubs to honour NYPD Officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora who were fatally shot whilst on duty in January.
Officer Rivera was part of the New York running community as a member of Dyckman Run Club, which led a moment of silence and took part in the start line presentation.
The race was created in 1998 to celebrate the Washington Heights community, promote neighbourhood safety, and introduce children to running. It has grown and become a neighbourhood party as local bands line the course and serenade runners.
