Having combined community events and elite cycle racing in 2021, the Tour Series will return to Sunderland once again this year.
Many of Britain’s leading men’s and women’s cycling teams will battle it out for glory around Mowbray Park, Sunderland, on Tuesday 10 May as part of the televised domestic cycling series.
Last year’s race, which attracted a reported crowd of 5,000 people, saw eventual women’s series champions CAMS – Basso, and men’s runners-up Canyon dhb SunGod take the victories in the unique team-based format. The event also reportedly generated over £70,000 for the local economy.
Organised by SweetSpot Group, highlights of the event will be broadcast on mainstream UK television, on ITV4.
For the first time in modern race history, the Tour of Britain – billed as the UK’s most prestigious cycle race – will also visit the city in 2022. It was announced last week that the finish of stage three will take place in Sunderland on Tuesday 6 September, with more details scheduled to be announced in the spring.
Mick Bennett, Tour Series Race Director, said “Sunderland gave the Tour Series an unforgettable welcome in 2021, as the city generated a carnival-like atmosphere throughout the whole day of community activities and thrilling cycle racing.
“We cannot wait to return there this year – especially as the Tour Series will be a great appetiser for the Tour of Britain stage finish in the city later on in 2022.”
This year’s Tour Series will get underway on Monday 2 May, as the series returns to its traditional calendar period for the first time since 2019. Details of further venues will be announced over the next few weeks.
