A new volunteer recruitment campaign has been launched today to mark 100 days until the Wizz Air Cardiff Half Marathon, which will return to the Welsh capital on October 2, 2022.
One of Europe’s leading road running events, the race is a major occasion for the city with over 25,000 runners set to take part and up to £3 million expected to be raised for charities and good causes.
Volunteers at the Cardiff Half are the ‘face of the race’ and are fondly known as the ‘Extra Milers’. Over 800 of them will be required to help make the event happen this year.
Race organiser Run 4 Wales (R4W) is a not-for-profit social enterprise that invests into grassroots sports and community projects. It is on the hunt for enthusiastic individuals and groups to help create an experience for the thousands of runners set to take part.
‘Volunteers do not need any formal experience or qualifications, and there’s a whole host of exciting roles to choose from with something to suit everyone.’
The new-look Cardiff Half has a new brand and headline sponsor Wizz Air, with new experiences for participants planned as a result.
The race is taking place on an October date for the first time in three years following Covid postponements in 2020 and 2021.
Race Director and Olympic Marathon Runner, Steve Brace said “Volunteers play a crucial role and are part of the reason that the Wizz Air Cardiff Half Marathon is so loved by runners and spectators alike, who come back for more year on year.
“They are the interface between the public and the event, and help create the sense of occasion that the race brings to the city. Their infectious passion has helped build a feeling of community which is why the event has become so much more than a running race.”
Volunteer Coordinator Tor Hands added “It’s so exciting to be formally launching our recruitment campaign for the 2022 Wizz Air Cardiff Half Marathon.
“You don’t need to run to be part of Wales’ largest mass participation event and I’m really looking forward to working alongside another special team of Extra Milers who will help us make sure the event is a huge success this year.
“Volunteering is a great way to experience the electric atmosphere of race day, have fun, make friends and enhance your CV. Our Extra Milers can choose from a range of roles and on event day will receive an exclusive Extra Milers t-shirt, refreshments, support from an experienced Run 4 Wales supervisor and our volunteer coordinator, as well having a front row seat to the action.
“We’re looking for individuals as well as local community and youth groups that might be interested in getting involved, with roles available on a first-come, first-serve basis. It’s also an excellent opportunity for corporate volunteering, offering a chance for team building and promoting mental and physical well-being by having a day outdoors together.”
