In support of this year’s Women on Wheels campaign, World Bicycle Relief (WBR) has partnered with OPEN and DT SWISS.
Following the OPEN x World Bicycle Relief dream bike auction in 2021, OPEN, DT SWISS, and World Bicycle Relief have partnered to offer fifteen limited edition UP frames and wheelsets with 100% of the retail price going to the Women on Wheel’s campaign.
The frames and wheelset designs were inspired by the patterns of the ‘chitengue’ fabric, worn by women and girls in Central and Eastern Africa.
This year’s Women on Wheel’s campaign comes as the communities in which World Bicycle Relief work continue to face a significant challenge to recover from the devastating effects of Covid-19. In particular, WBR notes that gender disparities have increased, leaving many more women and girls outside of paid employment, education, and the economy.
‘With access to bicycles, women and girls – particularly those in rural regions – have the reliable transport they need to focus on education, obtain vital healthcare services, and achieve greater earning potential.
‘The Women on Wheels campaign aims to target these women and girls and provide them with specially-designed Buffalo Bicycles, supporting them to unlock their potential as their communities emerge from the pandemic.
‘Beyond unlocking their own potential, women and girls can also power change in their communities and open doors to new opportunities for those around them. When provided with their own bicycle, women can support those that also need access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for entrepreneurship, as well as directly improve the prospects of their families.’
All money raised as part of the Women on Wheels campaign will go toward World Bicycle Relief’s mission to help people conquer the challenge of distance, achieve independence and thrive.
