International governing body, Europe Triathlon has stated that the 2024 PTO European Open in Ibiza, Spain, will not be handing out European Championship titles.
The PTO European Open will return to Ibiza, Spain, next year on September 28-29, 2024. Yesterday, PTO stated that the title of ‘European Champion’ will be at stake in Ibiza for professional female and male triathletes and age groupers.
PTO recently partnered with World Triathlon to recognise the 2024 PTO Tour as the official World Championship Tour of long distance triathlon. However, it appears that this relates only to world titles and will not cover Continental Championships.
A release from Europe Triathlon noted…
‘World Triathlon would like to express that, as was mentioned last August in the agreement signed with the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO), we have agreed to launch the official World Championship Tour of long-distance triathlon that will award the World Champion title.
‘In regards to the Continental Championships, the negotiations are still to be finalized and we hope to reach an agreement in the coming weeks; therefore no European Championship title should be awarded by PTO at this stage. We are in communication with the PTO to clarify this.’
Renato Bertrandi, President of Europe Triathlon, said “We are happy to have new collaborations with professional partners like PTO, but, at present, for the 2024 season, our European Championship for Elite and AG on middle distance will be staged in the Multisport Festival that will take place in June 2024.
“The location and date of the middle distance European Championships (as well as the other European Championships) will be announced next week.”
