Gran Fondo World Tour lands in Mexico

For the first time a Gran Fondo World Tour event has arrived in Mexico. The inaugural Gran Fondo World Tour Mexico will take place on April 23, 2023, at the Playa del Carmen Beach and Tourist Resort in Mexico’s Yucantan region.

The event features a 100km Half Fondo and a 160km Gran Fondo route through the coast and jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The new event, which will be part of the Gran Fondo World Tour (GFWT) points system, will start in the heart of Playa del Carmen’s main beach area and then heads north to the town of Puerto Morelos before taking a left into the Mexican jungle and the Cenotes route.

Once riders hit the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula in the town San Martiniano there will be a u-turn to return to Puerto Morelos.

This is the GFWT first race in Mexico and Latin America. Pricing for the Gran Fondo is US$160 (and the Half Fondo is US$120. Participants will receive a kit with sponsor goodies and also a race jersey. For those who didn’t register before April 7 to obtain the official race jersey, it also be available for sale for US$29 at the start of the race.

Parallel to the main cycling events there will be a family 10km race and concert at the starting plaza for family members to participate. Here, the cost of entry is US$15 and kids under 10 years old are free. At the end of the race there will be a podium and medals will be awarded, with gift products from sponsors also up for grabs.
