The 2023 Hi-Tec Run Catalina series kicked off on January 7, 2023, with the 42nd annual Avalon 50-miler and 50K. Held on Catalina Island, southwest of Los Angeles, CA, runners took on the scenic and challenging courses, which the event organizers swiftly adapted after heavy storms on the island.
The race, which benefits the Avalon Lions Club, is billed as California’s original ultra trail running event. The event’s 42nd outing was the first opportunity in 2023 for participants to begin earning the Catalina Island Triple Crown belt buckle. This is awarded to those who complete all three Hi-Tec Run Catalina events in a 12-month period.
“Part of creating the best experience for our runners is being flexible and adaptable, understanding that Mother Nature sometimes has other plans,” said Mike Bone, President and CEO of Spectrum Sports Management, which produces the Hi-Tec Run Catalina series.
“I’m proud of how quickly our team was able to update our courses in the final days leading up to the event. It allowed our runners to enjoy the beauty of the island while making their safety a priority.”
The Avalon Benefit 50 Mile / 50K Run raises funds on behalf of the Avalon Lions Club to support its charitable work and community assistance throughout Catalina Island.
Shelby Farrell and Paul Sinclair were victors in the 50-mile event. The 50K was won by Caitlin Healey and Cory Mayfield.
The Avalon Lions provide annual scholarships to all graduating high school seniors who wish to continue their education; assist families with medical expenses; and help build and restore parks and playgrounds around Catalina Island. It also helps maintain the natural environment of the island through support of the Catalina Island Conservancy.
The Hi-Tec Run Catalina series also includes the Catalina Island Marathon on March 11 and the Catalina Island Half Marathon on November 11. Participants looking to earn the Catalina Island Triple Crown belt buckle need only register for and complete all three events within a 12-month period. No additional registration is required.
