Aero cycling apparel specialist Rule 28 has launched its new High Speed Aero Base Layer, which, according to the company is… ‘optimised for greater performance when used at speeds over 50kph.’
A release from Rule 28 noted… ‘Following on from the original Aero Base Layer, now widely adopted by many of the World Tour peloton and surreptitiously nestled under numerous team kits at Grand Tour TT stages, Rule 28 recognised the demand for a garment that could suit the needs of road sprinters, track racers and the elite ranks of the TT world – a garment that came into its own above 50kph.’
“Our original Aero Base Layer is a fantastic performer for speeds below 50kph,” said Sam Calder, founder of Rule 28. “We’re thrilled to see so many elite riders choosing it for road racing and time trial races.”
“But we know there is an appetite for purpose-designed garments to suit the specific needs of road sprinters and track racers operating at speeds exceeding 50kph. It’s not a base layer for everyone, but for those racing at these high speeds – it’s a game changer.”

Rule 28 added… ‘The new High Speed Aero Base Layer is the result of the rigorous testing of numerous prototypes, each featuring custom fabrics with a range of rib spacings. The theory behind how two layer aero technologies work predicts that different rib spacings will yield optimal performance at different speeds.
‘The narrower spacing of the ribs in this High Speed Aero Base Layer, when placed underneath a skinsuit, proves more effective in reducing drag above 50kph.’
Prototype testing took place in the Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub Wind Tunnel using South African Olympic track cyclist Jean Spies, who sported the High Speed Aero Base Layer at the Track World Championships.
Of the 10 prototypes created, one winner emerged through the rounds of testing, excelling at speeds of 50-75kph and at two yaw angles designed to replicate velodrome conditions.
The High Speed Base Layer retails for £149.99. Rule 28 has published all aero testing results and data.
