Lahti in Finland hosted two-days of racing at the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship triathlon with more than 6,000 registered athletes from 115 countries, regions and territories represented.
The professional and age-group women raced on Saturday, August 26; and the professional and age-group men raced on Sunday, August 27. The weekend saw some record-breaking achievements.
Taylor Knibb secured a world best IRONMAN 70.3 time (03:53:02), beating Laura Phillipp’s (DEU) previous time by one second, set at IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai in 2022. Knibb joins Daniela Ryf (CHE) as the only two back-to-back IRONMAN 70.3 World Champions. She is also the only American female triathlete to win this event since Joanna Zeiger in 2008.
In the men’s professional field, Rico Bogen set an IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship best time of 3:32:22; a standard that hasn’t been broken since Michael Raelert’s 3:34:04 set in 2009. At just 22 years old, Bogen is also the youngest ever winner of an IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
Frederic Funk and Jan Stratmann completed the male podium making it the first ever fully German podium at an IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
Meanwhile, 11 pro men beat the standing IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship bike best time which was previously set by Andrew Starykowicz (USA) in 2009 (1:58:49).
Lahti is the most northern destination to ever host an IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, as well as being the third in Europe (Zell-Am-See, Austria, in 2015; and Nice, France, in 2019).
This year’s race in Finland did face some challenges however. Due to dense fog, which impacted swim visibility at Lake Vesijärvi, Saturday’s race saw a 30 minute delay to its start. Also on Saturday, August 26, a tragic fatality occurred during the swim portion of the race.
IRONMAN issued a statement confirming the news…
‘On a day meant to celebrate the spirit and achievements of our IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship athletes, we are devastated to share the passing of one of our race competitors. The athlete was extracted from the water approximately halfway into the swim, received immediate medical assistance by water safety first responders, and continued to receive treatment on shore by emergency personnel, including two event doctors.
‘Despite all medical efforts, the athlete passed away. Our thoughts and care are with the family and friends of the athlete, who we will continue to support as they go through this very difficult time. We also have great appreciation for the medical and safety teams who worked quickly to provide the athlete with medical support. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will have no further comment.’
