Strava data: UK women spend 54% less time cycling than men

Strava

A recent study by Strava, the subscription fitness platform, has revealed a significant gender disparity in cycling activity in the UK.

Between August 2022 and May 2023, women spent 54% less time cycling than men but are likely to dedicate more time cycling to work instead of leisure rides, with 41% of cycling activities tracked by British women being commutes, 6% more than men (35%).

Safety concerns, such as poor lighting and darker nights, were identified as deterrents for women. Additionally, a survey of female Strava users highlighted that over a third of women would feel more comfortable cycling with other female cyclists.

As part of the Strive for More campaign, a US$1 million commitment aimed to boost women’s confidence in the sport and close the gender gap, Strava has partnered with professional world champion cyclist and Strava user Lizzie Deignan, who commented

“The gender disparity in cycling is abundantly clear, and this data is a further reminder that we need to do more to get women comfortable and confident on the bike – whether for short city journeys and commutes or long weekend rides with friends.

“It’s no surprise that mornings remain more popular than evenings, and routes with protected bike lanes stand out as the popular spots for female cyclists – it ultimately comes down to safety, and we need to push on with more fit-for-purpose infrastructure that will support and encourage women to get on the bike.

“We need to break down the barrier and change the culture of everyday cycling for women. I’ve shared some top tips for those looking to get into cycling, and I’m confident we can start to close this gap once and for all.”
