First-time marathoners boost Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego 2025 participation

The organisers of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Diego in California have reported a 10% year-on-year increase in marathon entries, with more than 8,000 runners expected to take on the 26.2-mile distance on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

Nearly 70% of this year’s marathon participants are first-time marathoners, according to the event organisers.

“This year, we’re seeing more first-timers than ever, which is exactly what this series is all about welcoming new runners into the fold and showing them that running can be both a personal journey and a community celebration,” said Colleen McDonald, Race Director for Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Diego.

“Whether you’re chasing a PR or simply looking to finish your first 26.2, the community here embraces and celebrates every runner.”

Run clubs such as San Diego Track Club continue to play a role in supporting newer participants. The 2025 field also features increasing international interest, with a notable 78% rise in registrations from Mexico.

The course spans eight neighbourhoods and includes entertainment zones, cheer squads, and signature features such as the ‘163 Highway to Hill’ bell at mile 22.

More than 40 Legacy Runners are also set to return, having completed every edition since the inaugural race in 1998.

Online registration remains open through Sunday, May 25, and will reopen on site at the event expo, taking place at the San Diego Convention Center on May 30–31, subject to availability.
