Gary Adey stepped down as Chair of the Triathlon Trust at the charity’s board meeting on July 8, 2025, concluding over four years at the helm.
The Triathlon Trust is the official charity of national governing body British Triathlon. The charity focuses on providing opportunities for children and communities to lead healthier and more active lives through swim, bike, and run. Its programmes are designed to reduce barriers and motivate people of all ages and abilities, promoting physical well-being, teamwork, and personal development.
Appointed in April 2021, Adey played a pivotal role in guiding the trust through a post-pandemic strategy reset and was instrumental in its relaunch in February 2024. Under his leadership, the organisation unveiled a renewed focus on expanding community-based programmes aimed at breaking down barriers to physical activity.
The refreshed remit prioritised initiatives that promote essential life skills through swim, bike, run, and multisport.
Gary Adey said “It’s been an honour and a privilege to lead this passionate group of people who want to see more people from all backgrounds take part in sport and physical activity.
“We have made great progress in expanding community-based programmes that aim to make swim, bike, run accessible to everyone, with a focus on underrepresented and disadvantaged communities.”
Adey has recently taken on the role of CEO of VOIS at Vodafone and is also the Chair of the Teenage Cancer Trust corporate fundraising board. He added “I’m really proud to be leaving such a strong board with money in the bank and a clear strategy that will positively impact the lives of children and young people.
“Now, with the review of that strategy completed and approved by British Triathlon, it’s time to hand-over to someone who can commit more time than I am currently able to take this fabulous charity forward.”
Steve Rice, an existing trustee, will take on the role in an interim basis as the hunt for a new Chair begins.
Ruth Daniels, CEO of British Triathlon said “Gary has provided great stability and leadership at a time of uncertainty and is leaving the trust in a strong position to move forward and benefit the young people and communities it is there to support.”
As it moves to its next chapter the Triathlon Trust has also announced the appointment of a new trustee, Mark Ward.
Ward joins the trust with over two decades of corporate affairs and marketing communications experience working for UEFA, Asian Football Confederation, Tottenham Hotspur, England and Wales Cricket Board, Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Baku 2015 European Games.
