The organisers of the Manchester Marathon and Manchester Half have evolved their community fund, extending support across Trafford and the City of Manchester with the aim of championing a lasting sport and activity legacy.
Formerly known as the Trafford Active Fund, the initiative has been relaunched as the Manchester Marathon Community Fund. The new name reflects the events’ growing footprint across Greater Manchester and a strengthened commitment to the communities situated along the marathon route.
Each year, more than £60,000 is distributed through partner programmes that inspire movement, improve wellbeing, and help to create change for local people. As part of this ongoing commitment, £1 from every paid entry into the Manchester Marathon and Manchester Half will continue to go directly into the Manchester Marathon Community Fund.
The events are organised by Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.). Andrew Smith, Chief Executive of A.S.O. UK said “We’re incredibly proud of the positive impact the Trafford Active Fund has delivered locally over the years, and we’re excited to extend that impact across both Trafford and Manchester City.
“By broadening our reach, the Manchester Marathon Community Fund will help even more people to get active and contribute to a legacy of movement and wellbeing. Our relationship with Trafford remains as strong as ever, and we look forward to continuing to support the brilliant community projects that make a real difference there.”
The Manchester Marathon is Europe’s fourth biggest marathon and one of the UK’s premier running events. The 2026 event will take place on April 19, 2026. Known for its flat course, it is popular with elite runners and those seeking a personal best time.
The Manchester Half is a 13.1 mile challenge that takes place every October, starting and finishing near Old Trafford. The 2025 event welcomed 28,000 participants. The 2026 event is scheduled for October 4, 2026.
The Manchester Marathon Community Fund aims to ensure that the presence of these large-scale international events provides a tangible benefit to the health and activity levels of the local population.
