Strava introduces Muscle Map, and heart rate tracking via AirPods Pro 3

Strava has announced a series of product updates designed to help athletes better understand their training and to track progress. The latest ‘What’s New on Strava’ update includes new visualisation tools, expanded sport profiles, and hardware integrations.

A new Muscle Map feature is currently being tested to help athletes visualise their strength workouts. The tool is being rolled out to all users this month, with further updates planned as the platform expands insights into how different training types are displayed.

The latest software update also introduces five new sport types: basketball, volleyball, dance, padel, and cricket. This brings the total number of sports available on the platform to 52, allowing for more activity recording across a wider range of disciplines.

For athletes using Apple hardware, Strava has introduced heart rate tracking via AirPods Pro 3. This allows users to stream heart rate data directly to the app. For those using an Apple Watch, the integration is intended to improve tracking accuracy, while mobile users can view live heart rate data without requiring additional sensors.

Strava adds that it is also improving data reliability with enhanced Health Connect integration, allowing users to sync Strava data more seamlessly through their apps and devices settings.

Subscribers now have access to expanded Instant Workouts, which include weekly recommendations. For iOS users, this includes select workouts from Apple Fitness+, providing step–by–step guidance for running and riding, alongside audio cues for runners recording within the app.

For those training on varying terrain, Live Elevation tracking is now available. This feature allows for the monitoring of elevation gain and current altitude in real time through the Strava Apple Watch app or via mobile recording for hiking, trail running, and cycling.

Runners will also see the introduction of Automatic Pace Zones. If zones have not been manually set, the platform will now automatically adjust default pace zones based on an athlete’s 5k performance prediction.

To support consistency, the platform has launched new shareable milestones. These include Streaks shareables, which highlight the number of consecutive weeks an athlete has remained active, and Best Efforts shareables for celebrating personal milestones. A new Streaks widget has also been introduced for mobile home screens to help users track their progress.
