Competitor Group Inc (CGI), the leading active lifestyle media and event company, has announced that Caley Fretz has been promoted to Tech Editor for both Velo Magazine and VeloNews.com. Fretz has worked at Velo since September 2010, most recently as Associate Technical Editor. He began as an intern in the spring of 2009 while still attending Colorado State University, where he was president of the collegiate cycling team.
“Caley’s passion for the technical aspect of bike racing is unmatched,” said Neal Rogers, Editor-in-Chief of Velo. “He brings a depth of knowledge that our readers already recognize and appreciate, as well as a writing style that is inspired and original. His good-natured personality and keen attention to detail will serve him well in this new leadership role.”
Fretz was instrumental, along with former Velo Tech Editor Nicholas Legan, in developing the protocol for the VeloLab bike reviews. According to CGI these are ‘among the most comprehensive and scientific technical bike reviews in English-language publishing.’
He has been responsible for every phase of the review process, from planning to acquisition of product to testing and content creation, and has been immersed in the highest levels of cycling, covering the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and other major races in his career.

Fretz now splits his time between Boulder, Colorado and Annecy, France, keeping a finger on the pulse of European cycling and technology. Beyond his journalistic pursuits, he is a category 1 road and cyclocross racer. He also holds a professional cross-country mountain bike licence.
