Tobias Heinze is the new President of the Bavarian Triathlon Federation (BTV), following a narrow vote that saw Heinze win with 129 votes to 120 against presidential rival Pierre Jander.
As noted by triathlon blog, DNF Is No Option, Jander was considered the preferred candidate of the outgoing BTV board members. He has been involved in triathlon youth development since 2009; although he had distanced himself from the political turmoil surrounding former BTV President Peter Pfaff.
Under Pfaff’s presidency the BTV has been excluded from Germany’s national governing body, the Deutsche Triathlon Union (DTU). This follows a financial dispute over the annual sum of around €15000, for the last few years, which is understood to be due to DTU – adding up to an estimated €50000.
This disputed amount is for triathletes in Bavaria; those athletes that are not members of the BTV but are counted and submitted via local sports clubs to the state sports associations (Landessportbund Bayern).
Both of the new BTV presidential candidates had been pressing for a speedy return of ordinary business practices between the BTV and DTU.
Under an extraordinary meeting of BTV, a recent vote has given new President Heinze a mandate to build bridges with Germany’s national governing body. DNF Is No Option points out that Bavaria’s tri delegates have voted for a return of the Bavarian Triathlon Association to the German Triathlon Union (DTU).
