In only its second year in 2013, the Vachery Triathlon Festival is going from strength to strength. The organising team behind the event has already landed XTERRA back into the UK, with XTERRA England taking place at the Vachery Tri Fest site in September 2013 as the last of eight majors on the XTERRA European Tour.
Ahead of the return of XTERRA, the main Vachery Triathlon Festival takes place earlier in the year on 21 July 2013.
It has now also been confirmed that South London triathlon club, Windrush, is to race the Vachery Triathlon Standard for its Olympic distance club championships. Previously the club has raced at events such as Reading and Dartford, but this year opted to take part in the Vachery Festival in July.
2013 is just the second year of the festival, but following rave reviews from many of last year’s competitors it is expected to prove a popular choice. The event boasts closed roads for cycling – thereby making the bike leg both faster and safer as competitors race through the Surrey Hills – and the swim takes place in the stunning Vachery Pond.
Windrush was founded in 2008 and now comprises around two hundred members. Windrush’s home is Brockwell Lido but, using facilities across South London, the club offers members several coached sessions each week in swimming, cycling and running as well as a Pilates class to help with strength and injury prevention. Members are of all abilities from complete beginners to age-group internationals and full-time pros.
Windrush Chairperson, Laura Addis, commented, “We’re really excited to be taking our club championships to Vachery this year. One of our committee members raced their last year and was full of praise for it. While we’re looking forward to the race we think our members will also embrace the chance to camp overnight beforehand, which will be great for club spirit.”
Race organiser Mark Davies added, “We’re delighted to welcome Windrush to our event. Hopefully this will not only raise the profile of what we do but also encourage more people to take part in what is unquestionably a spectacular triathlon event.”
