Helping athletes make a transition into something new and better, Transition Sports is a new UK-based coaching and performance business. Offering ‘performance preparation to prepare your body like the pros!’, the company is running workshops in November and February at the David Lloyd Centre, West Bridgford, Nottingham.
Introduction
This series of two workshops will help athletes understand the importance of preparing the body for the volumes of training undertaken. It will show how athletes can objectively test themselves to highlight any mechanical weaknesses and then importantly identify the best exercise techniques to eradicate them.
All this can be completed very quickly and will not reduce the time available for training. It will however improve the quality of training and reduce recovery times so athletes can maximise the effort being put in.
This session will enable athletes to:
- Learn how to prepare the body ‘for the best race of your life’
- Learn how to prepare the body ‘for the best winter training of your life’
Issues to address:
- Correct knee alignment on the bike and when running by correcting the pelvis – not the feet!
- Shoulder problems? Shoulder treatment not working? Then, according to Transition Sports, it’s probably coming from your pelvis!
- Knee problems? Tried orthotics? Not working? Maybe it’s coming from your poor shoulder mechanics!
- Poor swimming technique? It’s probably not a technique issue; it’s the body’s inability to perform the movements correctly. During the workshops athletes will find out how to correct these issues.
What the workshops aim to deliver:
- Demonstrate how to self-screen to identify the key body parts that are not working optimally
- Teach athletes the best exercises to get those body parts working perfectly
- Show athletes how to synchronise ‘preparation training’ and ‘actual’ training programmes
- Explain how athletes can work on issues causing recurrent injuries, rather than just training round them
Transition Sports cites a number of benefits from the workshops:
- Improve race times
- Increase the capacity of the body to train
- Improve technique in all disciplines
- Provide the body with the capacity to move efficiently
- Reduce injuries
- Increase speed of recovery
- Increase power generated during key phases of all 3 tri disciplines
Ideal time to use:
- During winter training to optimise pre-season workload
- During the season to top up
According to Transition Sports, the workshop will enable athletes to:
- Increase down force on pedals by over 20% in 1½ minutes
- Improve hamstring power by 50% in 10 days!
The workshop leader is Martin Haines – an expert on intrinsic biomechanics; and as part of the Transition Sports team, he runs specialist training courses for triathletes to help optimise performance and prevent injuries.
Martin trained as a Remedial Gymnast and Recreational Therapist and then as a Chartered Physiotherapist. He has worked with professional football and rugby players, Olympic champions, F1 motor racing drivers, European golf tour professionals, rock musicians and movie stars as well as royalty!
Martin’s specialism is intrinsic biomechanics, which relates to an individual’s own mechanical makeup. This determines an individual’s ability to perform ‘extrinsic’ tasks, such as swimming, cycling and running. He performs a series of biomechanical tests to establish an athlete’s capacity to perform the required movements in their chosen sport(s) and then prescribes exercise techniques to improve any weaknesses.
Transition Sports notes that understanding intrinsic biomechanics is a critical precursor to any fitness or sports programme, especially one as diverse and demanding as triathlon training.
The price is £49.99 per workshop or athletes can book two for £80. The price also includes a David Lloyd day pass for the workshop dates.
Workshop 1: 2 November 09.30 – 12.30
Workshop 2: 15 February 09.30 – 12.30
