New challenges at 2014 Subaru Western Triathlon Series in Canada

The Subaru Western Triathlon Series in Canada has set out its 2014 race schedule along with some new features for next year’s race season. The series features five exciting events hosted in beautiful locations across Canada’s West Coast, Rocky Mountains and Prairie Region.

Athletes of all ages and abilities, from first-timers to the top elite, participate in different distances including Half Ironman, Olympic, Sprint and fun Relay events. According to the organisers, the 2013 series was very successful with highlights including a new race in Saskatoon that was aired nationally on TSN, the first ever Western Canadian High School Championships in Shawnigan Lake, the National Long Distance Championships in Vancouver, World Championship qualifiers, new course records and race sell-outs.

New features for the 2014 series will begin in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia, with the inaugural Trestle Challenge distance. This race will feature a 1.5K swim, 45K bike and a half marathon run course out to the spectacular Kinsol Trestle, which spans the Koksilah River ravine and runs high over the treetops in the Cowichan Valley.

Shawnigan Lake will also host the second annual Western Canadian High School Championships. Two student dedicated events, Sprint and Super Sprint, will be offered once again. Last year’s inaugural event drew students from 35 high schools, with many of these participants completing their first triathlon.

The Subaru Vancouver Triathlon will once again host Long Distance National Championships where the top 10 amateur athletes in each 5 year age group and the top 4 elite athletes will qualify to represent Canada at the 2015 World Championships.

New to the roster will also be a Half Iron distance Aqua Bike course; a swim and bike event with no run segment. This is positioned as ‘perfect preparation for Ironman Canada Whistler taking place 2 weeks later.’

The classic Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon will be expanding its Saturday music festival, and all the races will again keep many of the features that athletes have come to enjoy: beautiful courses, professionally-run events, qualifying spots, expos, family activities, race garments and much more.

  • Shawnigan Lake – 25 May 2014
  • Victoria – 15 June
  • Saskatoon – 29 June
  • Vancouver – 13 July
