Island hopping in Norway as XTERRA Nordic introduces Swimrun

Athletes will need a partner to race with, a wetsuit and running shoes to island hop at the new XTERRA Swimrun now being rolled out by XTERRA Nordic.

The Nordic Series’ Swimrun is a two-person event where participants alternate between running and swimming to the next island in Norway’s Oslofjord Archipelago. The 23 August event has a total of 50K of trail running and 8,000ms of open water swimming between 20 islands.

“The race starts at Ringhaugstranda and ends at World’s End, the southernmost tip of the island of Tjørne,” said Event Director Steen Aagaard Walter. “Every time you get to a new island, you run over it and swim to the next island. The longest swim stage is 1,200m and the longest run stage is 8km.”

The event will offer scenic views of the archipelago both on land and in water. The organisers expect the top teams to finish in six to seven hours.

“It’ll be tough, that’s for sure,” said Walter. “Rocks, forest paths and open water with waves and currents make the course very challenging. In return, it is extremely beautiful.”
