The new Giro Prolight helmet will officially launch on stage 7 of the 2009 Tour de France (on Friday 10 July), the first mountain stage of the race that culminates in the 2240m Andore Arcalis.
Weighing in at around 175g for a medium sized helmet, the new Giro Prolight will be worn by riders from Tour teams such as Astana, Garmin-Slipstream and Rabobank. The Prolight will be commercially available in 2010, with pricing to be confirmed.
Italian helmet producer Limar has a competing lightweight helmet. Yet, Limar’s medium Pro 104 helmet weighs in at 180g – so Giro’s Prolight may have edged ahead of its rivals to become lightest on the scales.
Meanwhile, Limar is to bring its lightweight Pro 104 to the US this autumn/fall. The new Pro 104, which has been available in Europe through 2008 has ‘The World’s Lightest Helmet’ emblazoned across its shell. In recent weeks, the Pro 104 has also had exposure across Italian TV, through its use in a commercial for Italian mobile phone network Wind.
