A Florida federal jury has found that the organisers of Ironman Florida and World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owner of the Ironman brand, are not liable for the death of Barney Rice who suffered a heart attack on the swim leg of Ironman Florida in November 2006.
Ironman brand owner WTC, became a defendant through its acquisition of Ironman Florida from North America Sports in January 2009. The wrongful death case was brought against North America Sports and World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), alleging negligence due to a claimed slow response and inadequately trained medical personnel.
However, during the case, the defence claimed that, ‘Rice’s heart attack was so massive, no one could have saved him.’ The jury in the case, ‘agreed and found the defendants not guilty of negligence and therefore not liable for damages.’
