The 2015 Noosa Triathlon was recognised as the world’s largest Olympic distance triathlon, and it’s a title event organisers are keen to hold onto.
Established in 1983 and hosted in Noosa Heads, Queensland, last year’s Olympic distance (1,500m swim, 40km ride and 10km run) triathlon saw over 8,000 participants cross the finish line, enough to knock the London Triathlon off top spot.
Last year Noosa was followed by the London, Hamburg and Chicago Triathlons respectively.
David Beeche, Managing Director IRONMAN Oceania, is keen to do everything possible to make sure the Noosa Triathlon holds onto the title of the world’s biggest.
“Last year’s accolade was an important acknowledgement for the Noosa Triathlon, recognising it as a leader of the sport and the world-class events that are hosted in Queensland,” said Mr Beeche. “Noosa Triathlon embraces an exclusive experience and atmosphere, something which I encourage everyone to participate in at least once. Noosa is not only the home of the great triathlon, but a base for some of the world’s best athletes as it offers a unique lifestyle which celebrates health, fitness and the outdoors.”
The field at this year’s event will be 70% male and 30% female. Queensland will be the biggest state with more than 3,000 athletes, New South Wales second with over 1,000 and Victoria third with more than 650.
Contributing more than 100 athletes, the UK will be the foreign country with the most entrants this year, followed by New Zealand and Ireland. In addition, athletes from countries including Afghanistan, Chile, Ireland and Zambia will be on the start line.
The average age of participants is 40, with Philip Scott the oldest participant at 80. At the other end of the spectrum, nine 15 year-olds have registered to take part in the event.
40-44 is the most popular age group for men, making up 11% of the field. For women, the 35-39 age groups is most popular, contributing 4% of the field.
The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival is a five-day hallmark event taking place from 26-30 October 2016. It offers a stacked line-up of events for all ages and abilities, including the Noosa Legends Triathlon, Subaru Noosa Australian Open Criterium and Noosa Asics Bolt, which attract premium fields and sporting legends.
The 2016 Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of a growing calendar of sporting, cultural and regional events across the State.
Entries are still available to all the festival events.
