625 athletes from the United States are entering the 2018 Fyn Multisport World Championships Festival in Denmark according to national governing body USA Triathlon (USAT). The US entries are seen as great news for the multisport festival but also for Denmark and the host island Fyn.
The 625 US athletes will be competing in one or more of the five world championship events that will take place from 6-14 July 2018 during the multisport festival.
”It is absolutely great news for our multisport festival and for the host cities Odense, Svendborg and Middelfart and our partners Sport Event Fyn and Sport Event Denmark,” said Morten Fenger, CEO of the Danish Triathlon Federation. “The entering of the 625 US athletes will surely leave a distinct and international imprint on the festival format and will most definitely bring a unique feel to the festival atmosphere amongst the audience and curious bystanders in the host cities.”
Fenger continued, “Large countries tend to enter world championships in large lumps, and with the entries of the US athletes, which are the first entries from a large country, we are very optimistic about reaching our goal of at least 2,500 entries from countries abroad.”
“Our athletes have a great tradition of bringing friends and family with them when they travel abroad to race on the world stage,” said Lauren Rios, Research Coordinator at Team USA. “Some friends and family might even participate in the sport themselves and I know many appreciate the opportunity to participate in any of the Open Race events that take place on the world championship courses and as well as take part in other spectator friendly events and functions in Fyn.”
Rios continued, “Others might just come to cheer on the athletes and experience the festival and spectator friendly atmosphere that has been created around the new ITU World Championship Festival format.
On average, athletes reportedly spend seven days abroad when they participate in this kind of world championship.
The Fyn 2018 ITU Multisport World Championships Festival takes place from 6-14 July in the cities of Middelfart, Svendborg and Odense, which are located on the Danish island of Fyn. The World Championships will be held in the following five disciplines: Duathlon, Aquathlon, Aquabike, Cross Triathlon and Long Distance Triathlon.
Competitions will be conducted for Elite, U23, Junior and Para athletes and age groups, while all other athletes will be able to participate in open races. The World Championships and the open races will be at the centre of festivities that ‘emphasize togetherness in sports, joy and activities for everyone including children and those that might not be hardcore athletes.’
The Danish Triathlon Federation, Sport Event Fyn, Sport Event Denmark and the host cities Middelfart, Svendborg and Odense are local partners on the event.
