On the weekend of 26-27 May in Galway, Ireland, the Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon is the season opener for the Castle Triathlon Series – back for a seventh year to host 12 triathlon races for adults and children.
In an addition to the triathlon races, the multisport weekend now includes three swim-only races of 1 mile, 2.5k an 5k alongside an off-road 10k and a half marathon run event. Building on the success of recent years, the Castle Triathlon team note that ‘the sporting weekend has grown from strength to strength and is set to host over 2,000 athletes from across Ireland and the UK at the lake shore castle estate.’ This should make 2018’s event the biggest Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon to date in Galway.
Triathlon Ireland Major Events
Highlights of the weekend include the hosting of three major Triathlon Ireland events: the Super Series Olympic Draft Legal Race is the curtain raiser on Saturday morning featuring some of Ireland’s most talented and super speedy triathletes, followed by the fast and furious Mixed Relay Club Championships in the afternoon where clubs will battle it out for the coveted national title across a short sprint distance race in a 4 person relay format. On Sunday, the BMW National Series Standard Distance Race offers up early season points for participating athletes.
The prize pool over the weekend includes Wheelscience Race Wheels for the fastest bike split in the Gauntlet Middle Distance Race – as well as trophies, cash and a host of other prizes from local partners including Velocity Bikes and Gotta Run.
The Castle Triathlon Series is operated by UK-based Matrix Events, with 6 main triathlon events delivered across the UK, Ireland and France. 2018 is the 7th year of the Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon in Ireland. This year will see the event run over two days with 2,000 athletes overall expected to descend on the County Galway castle estate.
