Bumper crops at leading UK vineyard ahead of this year’s Run Bacchus

The summer heatwave experienced across the UK has given rise to bumper crops at Denbies Wine Estate – the vineyard in Dorking, Surrey, that will form the backdrop of this year’s Run Bacchus.

Aimed at being Britain’s answer to the renowned ‘Marathon du Médoc’, the unique event in South East England, which takes place on 9th September, will allow wine-enthusiasts to run among the flourishing grapes, as well as taste the wines produced at Denbies along the way.

Run Bacchus will also feature a 5-mile run/walk this year, for those who prefer a shorter distance or wish to experience the event as a family.

Jeannette Simpson, Chief Operating Officer at Denbies Wine Estate, said “We are anticipating an outstanding harvest this year. All the conditions so far have been perfect, no frost, excellent fruit and sun! Run Bacchus participants will be seeing the vineyard at its absolute best, the marathon/half takes place just pre-harvest, so the vines will be laden with grapes – quite a spectacular sight.”

In addition to the soaring temperatures resulting in quality fruit and early flowering, Denbies Wine Estate was this year voted as one of the top five vineyards in the UK by World Wine Week.

With good prospects for the 2018 vintage, the race organisers add that ‘it is no wonder that members of Great Britain’s wine industry and the UK wine trade at large are inspired to don their running shoes and take part.’ Lynne Whitaker, founder and director of Winebrand, Julia Trustram Eve and Jo Cowderoy of WineGB, and winemakers, Sarah Midgley and David Cowderoy have all confirmed their attendance.

All will be running to raise money for, and awareness of the UK drinks trade charity, The Benevolent, and its #NotAlone campaign that highlights mental health issues.

Julia Trustram Eve, Marketing Director of WineGB, said “It’s great to get the support of the UK wine industry and wine trade in pulling together a Team WineGB for this year’s Bacchus Half Marathon – we’ll be flying the flag as we run through the beautiful vineyards at Denbies, as well as raising money for a fantastic cause. There is a wonderful atmosphere at the Bacchus Marathon, and I have no doubt that this year’s will be better than ever! Come along and support us!”

Jeannette Simpson of Denbies added, “We are delighted to welcome both seasoned and new runners from the wine industry, definitely a testament to the fact that the enjoyment of wine can be combined with a healthy lifestyle! We are also looking forward to an epic fancy dress turnout from the anticipated 2,500 runners, and following the event, we’ll be holding a Facebook competition with top prizes for entrants.”

Participants can choose to take part in either the marathon, half-marathon or the five-mile run/walk. Entrants can also enjoy up to 12 ‘refreshment’ stations that, in addition to offering tradition energy-boosting gels, will also offer replenishing food and tastings of wine.
