The European Triathlon Union (ETU) has announced an extra, end of year addition to its 2011 race calendar. On 4 December, the Triathlon del Mediterraneo-Gala Internazionale will be held in Palermo, Italy. This is an invitational International event and all National Federations are asked to encourage athletes to compete in this one-off, end of year race.
This is a sprint distance triathlon race but the format follows the successful formula used at the Tiszaujvaros Junior Cup back in August. The field is divided into two groups for the first preliminary round races of 500m swim/13.3K bike and 3.5K run. The top qualifiers will progress to the final for a further 250m swim/6.6K bike/1.5K run race.
The designated number of qualifiers from each group will be decided nearer the time and will be determined by the number of athletes who participate. There are no ITU/ETU ranking points available for this race but there is a total prize fund of €20,000.
Further details of the race will be released in due course by the Italian Federation and will be communicated by the ETU.
