A stretch of La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio is being made available for a virtual ride on May 9, thanks to ENDU Virtual Granfondo and the ROUVY virtual cycling platform.
International event, La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio, is one of five major Italian cycling gran fondos. Usually taking place in June, in North-West Italy, the event is a ‘coveted goal for 2800 cyclists from all over the world.’
Departing from Cuneo in Piedmont, the route takes athletes to cross scenic alpine roads, those that wind up the Maritime Alps, on the border with France. The main peak of the granfondo is Colle Fauniera with its 2481m of altitude.
The 2020 edition of the gran fondo has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the organising team, in collaboration with Italian endurance sport portal ENDU and the ROUVY cycling app, is offering a virtual section of the route. This can be ridden from home via the ROUVY app.
A virtual group ride is set for Saturday, May 9, from 09:00 CET. Riders will pedal a stretch of the route that goes from the village of Dronero, crossing the Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s bridge) and climbing towards Montemale and Valgrana. The finish line is set after about 14 km of ascent, at the Sanctuary of Castelmagno.
Overall, cyclists will virtually cover about 31.5 km and 1600m of simulated altitude gain. The stretch is part of the long route La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio, which spans 177 km and 4125m of elevation.
The event on May 9 is part of the ENDU Virtual Granfondo circuit, to which GF Gavia and Mortirolo, Granfondo Marcialonga Craft and GF Sportful Dolomiti Race have also joined. Registration is open to all and includes a ‘rich race package, just like in the real granfondo events.’
The virtual outings features free access to ROUVY, as well as a sample pack of Named Sport nutrition, a Canyon Bicycles voucher and a discount voucher on registration to next years’ granfondos of the circuit. Each event also offers up additional race packages.
La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio’s virtual race package includes: discount vouchers on Vittoria products, discount vouchers on bike trips with Officine Mattio, discount vouchers on Enervit products, and discount vouchers on purchases made on the ciclimattio.com portal.
The La Fausto Coppi Officine Mattio jersey will not be part of the pack. The organisers note that this is a collectors’ item that is given only to those who ride the real event.
