Among mountains and ancient olive groves, athletes from around the world can head to the ‘spiritual home’ of Spartan, with the Trifecta World Championship in Sparta, Greece. The event begins with opening ceremonies on November 3 with racing taking place on November 4-6, 2022.
This marks the third Spartan Trifecta World Championship and first since 2019, with the last two years postponed due to Covid-19.
The three days of racing in Sparta include US$30,000 of total prize money for elite athletes while also offering a community experience that ‘encompasses family, culture, and athletic challenges.’
“Competing in the Trifecta World Championship in Sparta is a transformational experience,” said Spartan Founder and CEO Joe De Sena.
“What better place to summon your strength, endurance, and mental toughness than across this historic city filled with the spirit of fearless warriors. Not only do you get the opportunity to challenge yourself, you get to feel the support of a community of like-minded people.”

Limited to 2,000 participants, athletes over the age of 18 will compete in all three events during the weekend. The festivities kick off on Thursday, November 3 with an opening ceremony and parade of nations.
- Racing begins on Friday November 4, starting with races for kids ages 4-14, along with the first race of the Trifecta – the Sprint (5K plus 20 obstacles).
- Saturday, November 5 features the Super (10K plus 25 obstacles).
- The Trifecta culminates with the Beast (21K plus 30 obstacles) on Sunday November 6, including awards and closing ceremonies.
Hosted by the Municipality of Sparta, the city’s history, architecture and landscape create a unique destination for competitors and visitors. Weekend events will feature a race festival with entertainment and activities that highlight Spartan history and the beauty of the country.
In this historic setting, top elite and age group finishers will have their names permanently engraved on the ‘Ancient Wall of Honor’ in Sparta’s town centre.
To qualify for the 2022 Trifecta World Championship, athletes must have completed a Spartan Trifecta between November 8, 2021 and October 30, 2022. There are more than 110 global Spartan event weekends in 2022 which include 30 Trifecta weekends. There are no finish time requirements for the Trifecta World Championship.
The Trifecta consists of completing three of Spartan’s signature obstacle course races – a 5K plus 20 obstacle race (Sprint or Spartan Stadion); a Super (10k with 25 obstacles); and either a Beast (21K with 30 obstacles) or an Ultra (50K with 60 obstacles).
Athletes can do the races individually over the course of a race season or in one of Spartan’s Trifecta Weekends.
