The results of Ride Green, the Giro d’Italia social responsibility project focusing on separate waste collection during the Corsa Rosa, have been made official and the most active municipalities in the 2022 edition have been awarded.
Organised by RCS Sport, the 105th edition of the Giro d’Italia, aka the Corsa Rosa, took place on May 6-29, 2022.
Ride Green, the sustainability project aimed at safeguarding the areas affected by the race through separate waste collection, was created in 2016. It aims to reduce the effects of the Corsa Rosa, through the management of the waste flows produced by the race, using a traceability system.
Awarded municipalities in 2022 were Isernia, Parma and Avola for stage starts; and Scalea, Cuneo and Napoli for stage finishes.
Throughout 2022, municipalities along the Giro d’Italia route played a key role as intermediaries between the companies and local consortia.
The Giro organisers note that… ‘They have recruited volunteers throughout the national territory and eco-islands for the correct management of waste flows. Their activity guarantees effective supervision and enhances the Giro d’Italia’s attention to the environment.
‘It spreads the principles of sustainability and makes the public, riders and all the stakeholders involved ever more aware about the key aspect of social responsibility and environment protection.’
The Ride Green initiative at this year’s event saw over 46,000 kilograms of waste collected during the Corsa Rosa, of which 85% was separated and sent for recycling.
Partners of the seventh edition of Ride Green were: Scarpa, Viessmann, Sitip and Würth MODYF. The media partner was Corriere della Sera’s Pianeta 2030.
