Preparations are in full swing for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) in Innsbruck-Stubai in Austria with a relaunched event website and confirmation of the event’s part in a 10-day running festival in June.
The WMTRC 2023 Innsbruck-Stubai concludes a ten-day mountain and sports festival, which will get under way on June 1, 2023, with the 8th Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival (IATF). This claims to be the largest trail running event in Austria and the third largest in the DACH (Germany, Austria & Switzerland) region.
Around 5,000 athletes from over 60 nations are expected in the area in the run-up to the World Championships; and, depending on preferred routes, can also compete on the World Championships trails.
Following the Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival, the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC), as part of a 10-day running festival in June, will be held in Innsbruck-Stubai from June 6-10, 2023.
Athletes from all over the world compete for medals in four different contests – Vertical, Trail Short, Trail Long, and Mountain Classic.
The organising team note that… ‘An attractive, top-class supporting programme and a great expo will also encourage sports enthusiasts to stay and watch the world championships.’
The WMTRC is overseen by event partners – the International Association of Ultrarunners, the International Trail Running Association and the World Mountain Running Association, alongside World Athletics.
“Preparations for the world championships have been in full swing for months and the turn of the year marked the start of a very intensive but also exciting phase in the run-up to this major event,” said Alexander Pittl, CEO of the event’s local organizing committee.
He added, “On challenging and world championships-worthy routes in the Kalkkögeln, at the foot of the Elfer peak with a view of the Stubai Glacier and on the Nordkette, athletes will fight for medals. The symbiosis of urban charm and nature experience in combination with a sustainable sport event rise the anticipation for this year’s World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.”
