3,000 registered athletes from 54 countries and 49 US states will converge in California’s capital city, Sacramento, for the 2023 Kaiser Permanente IRONMAN California triathlon, part of the VinFast IRONMAN North America Series.
The race weekend kicks off today (Thursday, October 19) with athlete check-in at the IRONMAN Village Expo at 400 Ballpark Drive, West Sacramento. On Sunday, October 22 athletes will begin their IRONMAN triathlon throughout Sacramento and the Central Valley.
In May, it was announced that general registration for the event was sold out. Additionally, in July, it was announced that IRONMAN and Visit Sacramento had agreed to a five-year host venue agreement to keep the IRONMAN California triathlon in Sacramento, CA, through 2028.
The 2023 edition of IRONMAN California includes an updated course. Athletes will begin their 140.6-mile IRONMAN journey with a 2.4-mile point-to-point swim down the American River near Township 9 Park.
Athletes will exit the water in the Sacramento River near Bridge before entering an improved transition area. The 112-mile bike course around the Sacramento River delta region is a fast, two-loop tour of the wine country of the Central Valley.
Athletes will then transition to the flat, two-loop 26.2-mile run course that first takes them along the Sacramento River and under Tower Bridge before entering the River Walk Trail. Once runners have been through Old Sacramento and reached the turnaround in Discovery Park, they will return to transition to begin their second lap.
Athletes will finish their final leg of the race in downtown Sacramento with spectators around the California State Capitol building and gardens.
