World Triathlon and Africa Triathlon sign four-year development agreement

World Triathlon and Africa Triathlon have signed a four-year development agreement that will run from 2025 to 2028, aligning with the Los Angeles Olympic cycle.

The initiative aims to accelerate the growth of triathlon and para triathlon across the African continent.

The agreement, led by World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany, outlines a new strategic framework for development. Africa Triathlon will deliver a four-year strategy and status analysis, with clear goals and key performance indicators (KPIs), as well as an operational plan and budget for 2025.

The strategy focuses on five key areas:

  1. Sport & administration management: including governance and membership
  2. Participation: covering grassroots and community development
  3. Performance: talent development and high performance
  4. Education: capacity building through training and certification
  5. Events development

A minimum of 10% of the funding will be dedicated to para triathlon, supporting education and technical development for a targeted inclusive growth of the sport.

Planned activities for 2025 include:

  • Regional Development Cups in Maputo (Mozambique), Kilifi (Kenya), and Saly (Senegal)
  • Athlete and coach development initiatives tied to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games
  • Formation of Team Africa to support Olympic potential athletes and juniors
  • Coach certification courses using Olympic Solidarity funding
  • Training for technical officials, with a focus on developing female and young technical officers (TOs)
  • Para triathlon support and technical education initiatives

“This agreement marks a significant step forward in our commitment to developing triathlon and para triathlon globally,” stated World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany. “The commitment to dedicating a minimum of 10% to para triathlon ensures that we leave no one behind.”

Africa Triathlon President General Ahmed Nasser said “Our focus will be on building strong governance, increasing participation, improving the quality of our events, and providing more opportunities for our athletes to compete on the world stage.”
