Used by over 350 elite teams worldwide, British sports nutrition brand Healthspan Elite has developed an energy gel range designed to reduce digestive discomfort during endurance efforts.
Co-created with leading sports nutritionists on Healthspan Elite’s Expert Panel, the formulation aims to address a key issue for endurance athletes – fuel delivery without negative gastro side effects.
Each 60g gel contains 25g of dual-source carbohydrates (2:1 maltodextrin to fructose), plus sodium, potassium and calcium to replenish electrolytes.
All gels are free from added sugar, artificial flavours, gelatin and synthetic sweeteners, and are suitable for individuals who are gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. Healthspan Elite notes that, unlike many energy gels, it uses pectin, a fruit-derived gelling agent that is a gentler alternative to xanthan gum.
‘Pectin creates a lighter consistency, and acts as a soluble dietary fibre, helping to slow glucose absorption and reduce the risk of stomach discomfort during exercise.’
Available in three flavours (Passion Fruit, Apple & Blackcurrant, and Citrus Fruits), the gels are built on a refreshing, natural taste – avoiding a synthetic taste profile.
Every Healthspan Elite product is Informed-Sport certified. Each batch undergoes rigorous testing for banned substances by LGC, a specialist anti-doping laboratory, providing the highest levels of assurance for athletes.
Martin Talbot, CEO of Healthspan, said “Endurance athletes have often had to compromise between effective fuelling and digestive comfort – until now. Our New Product Development and Technical teams, in collaboration with our expert panel, set out to change that.
“We’ve created a stomach-friendly, advanced formulation with dual-source carbohydrates, essential electrolytes, and a brilliant taste profile. It’s a breakthrough that empowers athletes at every level to realise their true potential and gives them the confidence in their fuelling strategy – during training and on race day.”
Rob Hobson, a registered sports nutritionist and member of Healthspan Elite’s Expert Panel, said “Energy gels can play a key role in fuelling performance during endurance cycling events. They provide a rapidly absorbed source of carbohydrates – typically a mix of maltodextrin and fructose – that helps maintain blood glucose levels and delay the onset of fatigue.
“Many also contain added electrolytes to support hydration and muscle function. For competitive cyclists, choosing products that are Informed-Sport approved like Healthspan Elite is essential to ensure they’re batch-tested for banned substances and safe to use in competition.”
