Building on the kudos of Kona’s role in the Ironman World Championships, a new triathlon will debut in September on Hawaii. The Lavaman Keauhou, an Olympic-distance triathlon held on ‘Big Island’, will comprise a 1.5 kilometre ocean swim, a 40 kilometre bike ride and a 10 kilometre run.
Beyond the Ironman World Championships, Hawaii is home to a number of triathlon events, including Ironman 70.3 Hawaii and the Lavaman Waikoloa, hosted by the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
Held on 19 September 2009, the Lavaman Keauhou is sponsored by the 2,300 acre Keauhou Resort, which is in turn managed by Kamehameha Investment Corporation, a subsidiary of Bishop Holdings, the for-profit arm of Kamehameha Schools.
Keauhou is just south of Kailua-Kona.
