In 2009 around 19,700 triathletes swamped the New York City Triathlon web site. Race slots for the 2010 New York City Triathlon, held on 18 July 2010, were allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. The race sold out in six minutes.
A recent New York Times feature entitled ‘Gone in a New York Nanosecond’ summarised some the frustration felt by the thousands of age groupers wishing to undertake the iconic New York event.
To prevent another online stampede for places, the triathlon’s organisers shall hold a lottery for the 2011 race.
“People were really upset — I got e-mails saying they needed a Cray supercomputer to get into the race,” said Race Director John Korff. “We want registration to be as fair as possible.”
Information about the 2011 Nautica NYC Tri lottery process will be posted on the race website on 1 June 2010.
