SRAM has announced that it will move production in Schweinfurt, Germany, to Asia. However, the groupset player is not closing its German facility. Instead, Schweinfurt will become SRAM’s centre for new product development, design and servicing for road, MBK and suspension systems, and trekking bikes.
“More and more customers have moved their bicycle production to Asia in past years,” said SRAM CEO Stan Day. “This ongoing change has initiated an important shift for us: producing closer to the customer to provide better service to the market. At the same time, the demand for qualified product service and training by distributors and dealers is growing.”
The firm explained: "The future of the location is not in question and SRAM will invest even more into the IGH [Internal Gear Hub] product R&D and production globally.”
According to the company, manufacturing of IGH products will decrease in Germany over the coming years as SRAM transits to existing IGH production in Asia. At the same time, SRAM will invest significantly in technology and manpower to increase the output – via the Germany facility – on the product development, dealer service and logistics side.
