The city of Auckland is on course to gain around $7 million from two high profile triathlons in the coming 12 months, according to a report by the New Zealand Herald.
Former Triathlon New Zealand (Tri NZ) CEO, Dave Beeche, who is now heading up the 2012 Triathlon World Championships programme, said that the ITU World Cup on 20 November and the Dextro Energy ITU Triathlon World Champs Series Grand Finale next October will “light up the [Auckland] waterfront”.
Both events will again showcase Auckland as a major global sporting destination, following on from the recent success of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
With 7,500 triathlon competitors expected to descend on New Zealand’s North Island, the $7 million economic impact is seen as a conservative and realistic projection.
