Iron Girl New Orleans

The Iron Girl series of half marathons owned by World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) is reportedly on its way to New Orleans – with the inaugural Athleta Iron Girl New Orleans Half-Marathon scheduled to take place on 20 November 2011.

The women-only half marathon will join the Iron Girl New Orleans Triathlon as part of the series’ events in the city.

“We are excited to bring the Athleta Iron Girl Half-Marathon to New Orleans,” said Judy Molnar, Vice President of Iron Girl. “New Orleans is an ideal destination for women to challenge themselves while enjoying an event getaway with all the charm the Big Easy has to offer.”

The course will start and end in City Park and take runners through parts of the French Quarter. Along the race course, Iron Girl officials will have entertainment zones set up with a disc jockey or local band playing music. Runners will also be able to request songs to be played.

The half marathon will be the fourth World Triathlon Corporation event of the year in the city, after the Iron Girl triathlon, the Ironman 70.3 and the 5150 New Orleans.

“Having an office here and a production team based here helps, but that coupled with New Orleans being a great destination location, it makes sense to bring additional events here,” said Race Director Bill Burke. “Racers are going to get to visit one of the truly unique cities in the world.”

“The interest in women-only running events and triathlons is making a bigger and bigger impact,” Burke added. “The increase in triathlon and the resurgence in running is because of women entering the sport.”
