Ironman Australia scoops up tourism award

The Urban Hotel Group Ironman Australia event was awarded a bronze medal in the category of Major Festivals and Events by New South Wales Tourism last week. This represents a high honour for the event that takes place in Port Macquarie in May and typically attracts some of Australia’s top Ironman talent in both the age group and pro ranks.

As an official qualifier for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawai’i for over 25 years, Ironman Australia has a rich history as one of the sport’s most prestigious events. Urban Hotel Group Ironman Australia will take place in Port Macquarie, NSW on Sunday 6 May 2012.

The 2012 race filled in record time. Back in May of this year, an unprecedented speed of registration for general entries saw 1,550 athletes successfully secure an entry for the 2012 Ironman Australia event. 1,450 general entries were secured upon opening of registrations at 12pm AEST on Wednesday 11 May 2011. An additional 100 general entries went on sale at 12pm local time on 12 May. These 100 general entries were snapped up at a record pace, almost immediately upon the opening of registrations.
