Nottingham based triathlon coach Steve Lloyd was named the British Triathlon Federation (BTF) National Performance-Development Coach of the Year at the recent British Triathlon Awards ceremony in Leicestershire on Saturday 12 November 2011.
The event, held at the Barceló Hotel in Hinckley, celebrated the success of athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials – all involved in one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Many of triathlon’s brightest stars from past and present were at the event including future Olympians Alistair & Jonathan Brownlee, Helen Jenkins and of course Chrissie Wellington MBE.
Steve Lloyd, 43, has been coaching for seven years and on moving to Nottingham in 2009 launched Absolute Triathlon Club, which now boasts over 180 members from aged 7 upwards. He is currently Head Coach and Chairman of the club that now has a strong presence in the region and a reputation for developing beginners.
Commenting on the award Steve Lloyd said, “I am really proud to win the Performance-Development Coach of the Year Award; to celebrate this amongst my peers at the event was awesome. I coach to get the best out of everyone’s performance regardless of what level they are. I am lucky enough to work with some fantastically talented athletes but equally lucky to be involved at the grass roots level. Thanks goes to those who nominated me for the regional award in the first place and to everyone who has supported me as a coach.”
Steve’s success doesn’t stop there; he has also been shortlisted for the Nottingham Sports Awards Coach of the Year, with the awards event taking place at the Council House Nottingham on Thursday 24 November. The club has also made the finals for the Nottingham Sports Awards Club of the Year for the second year running.
Lloyd has worked with a number of athletes who have progressed to representing Great Britain in their age group. He travelled out to Spain this year for the European Championships and will be heading to the Israel event in 2012.
Lloyd is also a Regional Head Coach for the BTF working with the West Midlands Triathlon Academy, developing the future stars of triathlon. As part of this role he will attend a number of camps over the next 12 months to assist working with the Olympic Talent Squad.
