LOOK and Polar to ship Keo Power in October

LOOK and Polar are raising the stakes in power measurement as the battle unfolds to get the latest technology to market. Originally unveiled at Interbike 2010, the Keo Power pedal power product, combining technology from both companies, was originally planned to become available in January 2012.

According to both companies, Keo Power will be available in all major European markets as well as in the US and Canada in October 2011. The Kéo Power pedals communicate with Polar CS600X and CS500 cycling computers through the proven W.I.N.D. protocol for solid disturbance-free transmission. The CS500 displays power output and cadence. The CS600X also shows left/right balance and Cycling Efficiency Index.

Look is conducting product presentations of the Keo Power Pedal at Interbike 2011 in Las Vegas. The demos will take place at booth #22109 today, Wednesday 14 September, at 11:00 local time and on Thursday 15 September at 11:00.

The Look Kéo Power solution is billed as the first power and cadence measuring pedal for the most demanding cyclists. Combined with Polar technology for data transmission and display, the Kéo Power delivers pedalling information via direct display on the bike computer.

Each pedal senses the cyclist’s power and rate through the pedal shaft and transfers all data to transmitters (fixed on the crank arm), which send information directly to the computer using wireless technology.

According to Look and Polar, the Kéo Power permits very accurate measurement of the cyclist’s power and cadence. Each axle is equipped with 8 strain gauges permitting measurement of the axle deflection and thus the forces applied to it.

The axle electronics are designed to measure forces up to 170kg. Although, the axle itself can of course support much larger forces. The cadence is measured using a reed relay placed in the axle of the pedal.

Through the force and cadence measurement, the Kéo Power is capable of reading power. The information is then sent to the Polar transmitter, which sends it wirelessly to the meter via the WIND protocol.
