With over 3,000 participants, Challenge Kraichgau, scheduled to take place this weekend on Sunday 10 June 2012, is Europe’s largest half iron distance event and will host the 2012 Kraichgau ETU Challenge Half Distance Triathlon European Championships for Elite and Age Group athletes over the 1.9K/90K/21K distance.
The 2012 event follows the partnership, confirmed earlier this year, between the Challenge Family and the European Triathlon Union (ETU). The agreement between the Challenge series race organizer and Europe’s governing body for triathlon sees Challenge Kraichgau and Challenge Roth both host Long Distance Triathlon Continental Championships in 2012.
(Challenge Roth, on 8 July 2012, is renowned as a major home of European triathlon and is the largest iron distance race in the world. Roth will host the 2012 Roth ETU Challenge Long Distance Triathlon European Championships for Elite and Age Group athletes over the 3.8K/180K/42.2K distance.)
At the pre-event press conference, Challenge Kraichgau Race Director Björn Steinmetz said, “We have the greatest middle distance event ever. We want our event and the excellent image of the European Championships to take centre stage, so that both the ETU and the Challenge Family have added value.”
Felix Walchshöfer, CEO of Team Challenge GmbH added, “Kraichgau is a key middle distance event, and has become one of the global flagship events of the Challenge Family for 2012. The race organizers have come up with a field of top athletes, the strongest that has never been here.”

New for 2012, fans, friends and supporters of the Challenge Family series can experience the popular series via iPhone or Android phones. The app gives the ‘virtual spectator gives extensive information and complete live coverage of all triathlon events in the Challenge Family.’
Continuous updates on the race course, determining the location of individual athletes, race course maps, results and pictures are all available.
