Registration for Ironman 70.3 Berlin is now open – as Berlin, Germany, hosts a brand new Ironman 70.3 event on 16 June 2013. The new event is expected to draw up to 2,000 participants, who will start their day with a 1.9K swim in the River Spree, which runs through the city of Berlin.
The race start, finish and transition area take place in what was once East Berlin. During the swim, the athletes will touch the old border between East and West Berlin before returning to the transition area to start the 90K bike ride.
The bike course heads through the city to the Grunewald Forest, then heads back to Berlin onto the former airfield at Tempelhof Park. The 21K run course takes place on the former airfield before heading through Hasenheid Park and returning to the finish, which will also be on the airfield.
Before it closed in 2008, Tempelhof Airport was one of the oldest commercial airports in the world, and was renowned as one of the three iconic pre-World War II airports (along with London’s Croydon and Paris’ Le Bourget).
Also close to the race site is the famous East Side Gallery, a 1.3K section of the Berlin Wall, which is made up of a series of paintings designed as an international memorial for freedom.
More specific information about the courses for Ironman 70.3 Berlin will be available in January 2013.
