Llandudno Sea Triathlon back for 2012

The Llandudno Sea Triathlon, a major event in the UK multisport calendar, is back for 2012. The event takes place on Saturday 23 June 2012 and entries are open at www.xtramileevents.com/enter-now.

Since being voted 220 Triathlon magazine’s Race of the Year (in the ‘under 500 entries’ category) the Llandudno Sea Triathlon has been growing in size and popularity, with 750 competitors expected to be on the start line in this Olympic year.

Competitors can enter the standard or sprint distance, with both races incorporating the thrill of a sea swim and a challenging cycle section on closed roads around the Great Orme, with glorious views over the North Wales Coast. The run route goes out along the Victorian Promenade before heading over the Little Orme to Penrhyn Bay and back to finish on the promenade. A racked transition will be used, and results will be via electronic chip timing.

The start time is 12 noon and the main race registration will be at The St Georges Hotel on Saturday 23 June between 06:00 and 09:00 GMT. The Llandudno Sea Triathlon is BTF sanctioned. The standard distance race includes a 1500m open water swim followed by a 36K (4 laps) cycle and a 10K run. The sprint race consists of a 750m open water swim followed by a 19K (2 laps) cycle and a 5K run. Transition is near the jetty on the promenade providing an exciting spectacle for those who just want to watch the action!

Race Director Simon Hill said, “The Llandudno Sea Triathlon has quickly become one of the most important races on the UK triathlon circuit, and winning the Race of the Year Trophy shows that Xtra Mile Events have a winning formula. The course incorporates a new swim course in the calmer part of the North Shore nearer to the pier, laps around the Great Orme on closed roads with stunning views, a challenging climb and fast descent, followed by a run over the Little Orme and back to finish on the promenade. We can’t wait to deliver another great race in Llandudno this year.”

Event costs are £62 for individual entries or £75 for team entries and prizes will be awarded in the following categories: overall winners (male and female), male and female age groups, relay team prize, club prize (first 3 athletes from the same club) and novice prize.

Race organisers are hopeful of attracting a number of new recruits to one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, as well as encouraging the locals to come down to the promenade to soak up the atmosphere, cheer on the competitors and show support for a growing event that has firmly put Llandudno on the map as a high profile triathlon event. The winners are expected to cross the finish line just after 14:00.

Entries close on 9 June 2012 or when the event is sold out.
