Norton Sports Health sponsored the 2012 Ironman Louisville event on Sunday 26 August. As it has in previous years, Norton Healthcare and its nurses and physicians also set-up and managed the athlete immediate care and medical area at the Kentucky International Convention Center. As the race organisers point out, the Ironman Louisville immediate care area is the largest temporary emergency care facility outside of hospital emergency rooms in Kentucky.

“We are thrilled to be involved with Ironman Louisville this year and are even more excited to be part of a new event focused on health and wellness for the youth in our community” said Jon Cooper, System Vice President, Surgical & Orthopedic Services for Norton Healthcare. “As a leader in orthopedic and sports medicine, it is our goal to help athletes get back in the game. We are looking forward to providing area athletes this opportunity by sponsoring the Ironman and IronKids events in Louisville now and in future years.”

A new event was added to this year’s line-up. The UnitedHealthcare IronKids Louisville fun run presented by Kosair Children’s Hospital took place on Saturday 25 August at 10:00 local time on the Great Lawn of Waterfront Park. With a nominal fee of US$10, the IronKids event was open to youth athletes, between the ages of 3 and 15.

Ironman Louisville presented by Norton Sports Health, began at 06:50 on Sunday 26 August on the Great Lawn of Waterfront Park. The swim took place in the Ohio River. The bike course took riders through the City of La Grange and Oldham County while the run course took athletes past the waterfront, University of Louisville campus, Churchill Downs and many of Louisville’s historic neighbourhoods.

The race finished at Fourth Street Live! in downtown Louisville. A total of 2,556 athletes entered the Ohio River on Sunday morning to start Ironman Louisville 2012. Patrick Evoe (USA) and Bree Wee (USA) celebrated victories with the men’s and women’s titles at the sixth edition of the race.
