The Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC) weekend generated US$1.4 million, including funds raised by the 24 Hour Fitness Tour de Cove stationary cycling marathon, and the Kaiser Permanente Thrive-5K Fitness Walk. The funds raised this past weekend will allow the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to continue to provide equipment, training and support for physically challenged individuals to find success in sports – and in life.
A radiating glow seemed to part the clouds at the La Jolla Cove on Sunday morning. More than 7,000 people made their way to the picturesque setting for the 19th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge, bringing together a weekend-long festival of events celebrating what is possible for athletes with physical disabilities.
The SDTC event, which includes the 24 Hour Fitness Tour de Cove cycling marathon and Kaiser Permanente Thrive-5 K Fitness Walk, welcomed more than 300 challenged athletes, 700 able-bodied athletes and 5,000 supporters.
Thanks to support from sponsors, fundraisers and donors, this year’s SDTC weekend was one to remember. From the youngest toddlers to medal-winning Paralympians, challenged athletes of all ages and abilities were given a unique opportunity to prove to themselves, and the world, that there is nothing they can’t accomplish.
Money raised at last year’s SDTC funded a record 1,106 grants for challenged athletes in the US. and around the world. CAF has now funded close to 7,000 individuals over the past 19 years. Now with the success of this year’s SDTC CAF will be able to serve even more challenged athletes in 2012.
