The Running Show finds that women are outrunning men

The organisers of The Running Show – which takes place on 24-25 November at Sandown Park in Surrey, UK – have recorded a greater share of pre-registered female runners for the forthcoming event. The show currently has a 55:45 female to male ratio of pre-registered visitors, with these female runners fairly new to the sport.

Jessica Ennis, Nicola Adams, Ellie Simmonds, Victoria Pendleton, Rebecca Adlington and Lizzie Armitstead – The Running Show notes that Britain’s sportswomen are leading the way; with 4,847 women having taken part in the London 2012 Olympic Games this year, it’s been a stellar year for female sporting achievements.

However, recent reports have suggested there are problems with the number of women playing sport, with only one in eight women participating regularly. This makes it difficult to understand how TeamGB’s female athletes are thriving.

David Townsend, founder of The Running Show, said “The sporting world was traditionally male dominated, but tides are turning. That said, things won’t change overnight. The Olympics has inspired many women to take up sport. The momentum needs to be maintained and the Olympic legacy leveraged for the better of female sport.”

Townsend continued, “We’ve found that women are incredibly interested in running. It is one of the most accessible sports there is and with 55% of those signed up to attend the Running Show this year being from the female camp, it’s clear they are cementing their place in sports.

“Interestingly, 64% of the women attending the show are either new to running or in the improver category. On the other hand, women do seem less interested in competing, with only 2% saying this is their main motivation. The main reason women run seems to be for fitness (64%); and two-thirds run three plus times a week.”

The Running Show will take place on 24-25 November at Sandown Park in Surrey, where visitors, whether new to running or a marathon veteran, will be able to gain valuable information from major running brands.

The Running Show will provide information on training plans, choosing the right apparel, nutrition options and much more. Pre-registered visitors will gain free entry. For those turning up on the day it will be £12 on the door.

There will also be a 10K and 2K family run on 25 November.

The Running Show organiser, TCR Shows Ltd has been in the business of running trade and consumer exhibitions for the past 10 years. Based in Shepperton, Middlesex, TCR Shows has grown to become a leading specialist in niche consumer shows – with a focus on the multisport category. Its flagship Triathlon Show, launched in 2003 at Sandown Park, has grown to become the premier event in the tri sector. This year it launched the Road Cycling Show, again at Sandown Park.
