ESSNA stresses sports nutrition safety & compliance ahead of London Marathon

The European Specialist Sports Nutrition Alliance (ESSNA), which recently expanded its remit to help ‘police’ the sports nutrition industry, has advised entrants in this year’s London Marathon that reputable sports nutrition products can legitimately aid their performance and recovery.

ESSNA notes that sports nutrition products, such as those available from its members, can help by improving hydration, providing energy and aiding recovery. Such products should comply with European food law, which requires that they are safe and appropriately labelled.

ESSNA’s advice follows its recent announcement that it is to expand its regulatory campaigning activity to police the sports nutrition industry for compliance with EU regulations, while also serving as the industry voice for responsible and reputable manufacturers, distributors and suppliers.

Dr Adam Carey, Chair of ESSNA, the representative body for European sports nutrition manufacturers and distributors, said, “Running the London Marathon is one of life’s great achievements, and it’s important that entrants in this year’s event enjoy the experience and have the opportunity to achieve the time they are targeting.

“Many runners will be using sports nutrition products as part of their preparations, during the race, or to aid their recovery. These can have enormous benefits, but it is important that runners make sure they are using products that comply with EU regulations that are in place to ensure quality and to protect consumers.”

The European Specialist Sports Nutrition Alliance is an alliance of European sports nutrition companies that was formed in December 2003.

Members of the alliance include Adams Food Ingredients, Aminolabs, Body Temple UK, Carbery, CLF Distribution Ltd, First Milk, Garnell Corporation, Iovate Health Sciences, Mass Nutrition Kostexperten, Maxinutrition, myprotein.co.uk, NSF, Prometeus, Sci-MX Nutrition, Tropicana Health and Fitness, US Nutrition, USN UK, Volac, Weider Germany.
